New Coronavirus Restrictions in Scotland: What You Need to Know

The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has unveiled a range of new restrictions in order to combat the rise in Covid-19 infections.

The main announcements in her statement to parliament were as follows:

  • There will be a nationwide curfew of 10pm from Friday 25th September for pubs and restaurants. The Scottish Government do not rule out further restrictions – including closure – if guidance on hygiene, facemasks, social distancing are not complied with.
  • From tomorrow, visiting other households indoors will not be permitted, thereby extending the restrictions in Glasgow and the west coast to the whole country, with limited exemptions.
  • These new restrictions may not necessarily be in place for 6 months, and will be reviewed every 3 weeks, and the FM hopes that the new measures will be in place for a shorter period if people stick to the rules.

From Friday 25 September, people from more than one household (or extended household) must not stay in self-catered accommodation together while the current restrictions on indoor private gatherings are in place. This includes accommodation such as a caravans, flats and holiday cottages. If you are staying in a hotel, bed and breakfast or similar accommodation, you should not have more than one household (or extended household) staying in each room booked.

What is the definition of a household?

Self-catering businesses, like others within the tourism and hospitality sector, remain open to receive visitors if existing guidelines are adhered to. As the First Minister stated in her speech:

“These new restrictions apply to people’s homes – in other words, to private indoor spaces.”

“Rules for meeting other people in public indoor spaces that are subject to strict regulation and guidance, remain the same – you can meet with one other household only and in groups of no more than six people.”

“…We will be working with local authorities to strengthen inspection and enforcement in indoor public places and enforcement action, including closure if necessary, will be taken against shops, pubs, restaurants or other premises that do not ensure compliance.”
