Queens Birthday Honours – David Smythe, awarded an MBE for Services to Tourism

MBE for Short-Term Letting Stalwart

Former ASSC Chairman, David Smythe, has been awarded an MBE for services to tourism in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Under David’s leadership, the ASSC has grown from a loose group of operators meeting around a kitchen table to a professional body with full-time staff, over 650 members in more than 7000 properties, and with representatives across Scotland.

David’s tenure at the helm of the ASSC also saw the association expand to become the voice of short-term letting in Scotland and actively engage with MSPs, Councillors, and the Scottish Government on matters impacting its members’ interests.

While David is no longer the Chairman of the ASSC, he remains an active participant and uses his knowledge and experience to advise members and the board of directors alike.

He was also instrumental in delivering the ASSC’s 2018 conference which was the biggest event of its kind ever to be held in Europe and will be in attendance for the 2019 conference in Glasgow on 29 October on the theme of Scottish Self-Catering: A Bright Global Future.

A farmer living near Methven, David has been welcoming guests from around the world to Cloag Farm Cottages for over 30 years and continues to do so.

David also continues to chair the Perthshire Tourism Partnership and is its representative on the Perth and Kinross Local Action Group.

Commenting, former ASSC Chairman, David Smythe MBE, said:

“I am surprised and delighted to receive this award.

“In particular, I am grateful for the recognition of the ASSC and its members, staff, and especially the many volunteers who have made it the success it has become.

“This award is a reflection of how far we’ve come as an organisation and of the work we all do for our sector, which is worth £723million to the Scottish economy annually.”

ASSC Chief Executive, Fiona Campbell, said:

“David’s MBE is a well-deserved reward for a career that has been characterised by dedication and hard work.”

“All of us at the ASSC are delighted to see David’s record of achievement being recognised in this way.

“He has been a stalwart of our association and a valiant champion of short-term letting for many years and has steered both through many challenges and successes.

“We are grateful to have his continued support and guidance.”
