Parliamentary Motion: Economic Impacts of Short-term Lets in Scotland

The following Motion ‘Economic Impacts of Short-term Lets in Scotland’ was lodged and submitted by the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Business, Economy, Tourism and Culture Murdo Fraser, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party on Tuesday, 14 January 2025

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of a new independent economic analysis of the short-term let sector by BiGGAR Economics, commissioned by the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC); notes the reported findings, which highlight the substantial economic benefit through the industry contributing nearly £1 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) to the Scottish economy while supporting approximately 30,000 jobs, with guest spend boosting hospitality and other local businesses; understands that, according to the report, the Highlands makes up the largest proportion of the total Scottish impact, overtaking Edinburgh, and generating £200 million GVA and supporting nearly 7,000 jobs; further understands that economically inactive empty homes account for a larger proportion of total dwellings than self-catering properties in every local council area; commends the hard work and dedication of all those professionals involved in the self-catering industry in welcoming domestic and international visitors to the country, as well as the ASSC for championing their cause, and hopes that this evidenced-based report can help better inform local and national approaches to regulation to ensure a sustainable future for what it sees as this important Scottish industry.
