Founded in 1965, Interhome is a holiday home specialist with a portfolio of approximately 40,000 holiday homes across more than 20 countries. As we approach our 60th anniversary in 2025, we continue to offer a comprehensive service package to both property owners and guests, facilitated by over 120 local service offices and a Europe-wide network of partners. Our services include international marketing, distribution, and maintenance work to ensure optimal occupancy and returns for property owners.
In 2023, we achieved 9.4 million overnight stays and generated sales of CHF 390 million. As part of the Hotelplan Group based in Glattbrugg, Switzerland, we have recently expanded our presence in Scotland with two new local service offices in Drumnadrochit and Aviemore, providing full property management services throughout the Highlands and Islands, with more local offices coming soon.
One tip we would give to self-catering operators looking to improve their business is to establish a strong local presence. Throughout our years of operation, we have found that having local staff with local knowledge significantly helps to instill trust and provide a better experience for guests. This approach not only enhances the guest experience but also builds lasting relationships and loyalty.
Our favourite part of working with the self-catering community in Scotland is the incredible sense of support and collaboration. The community is always willing to work together to enhance Scotland’s appeal and provide tourists with an exceptional experience. This collective effort not only benefits the guests but also fosters a strong, united network of operators who are dedicated to showcasing the best of what Scotland has to offer.
One thing that might surprise people about Interhome is our active commitment to sustainability in the holiday rental industry. We have implemented a range of innovative initiatives designed to promote responsible tourism. Beyond the steps we are taking to reduce our own emissions and act as a responsible business, we are also committed to providing our customers with sustainable options and informing them about this important topic. Guests can easily find sustainable properties through a dedicated search feature, which highlights accommodations that meet specific environmental standards. Guests also highly appreciate the option to filter holiday homes with an e-charging station as the amount of guests arriving by e-car is increasing steadily.
Central to our efforts is our new ECOmodation sustainability label, which recognises environmentally friendly accommodations based on 24 rigorous scientifically developed criteria in collaboration with sustainability experts from two different universities. We are currently conducting a survey among all our homeowners to determine which of our properties meet the criteria. Interhome’s long-term goal is for the new label to be used throughout the industry – so that it serves as a credible standard for guests.
We have also begun calculating the CO₂e footprint for our holiday homes to promote further transparency. Additionally, we offer guests the possibility to make a voluntary contribution towards a climate protection project.
Moreover, Interhome has pledged to the UN World Tourism Organisation’s “Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism,” committing to a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. These efforts reflect our dedication to fostering sustainable tourism practices and ensuring a positive impact on the environment for future generations.
We recently partnered with a well-established local self-catering operator. Initially, we had different working styles, but over time, our collaboration has blossomed into a highly successful business. Both parties have learned and grown significantly from each other.
This partnership has not only improved our operational efficiency but also enhanced the guest experience. By combining our strengths and expertise, we’ve been able to offer a more seamless and enjoyable stay for our guests. This success story is a testament to the power of collaboration and the mutual benefits that come from working closely with dedicated local operators.
