We were honoured to join Caroline and Ross Millar in celebrating two significant milestones: 40 years of Balkello Farm and 20 years of their self-catering business, The Hideaway Experience. A valued member of the ASSC and a driving force behind Scottish Agritourism, Caroline, alongside her husband Ross, has played a major role in shaping the agritourism landscape here in Scotland.
The Hideaway Experience, based just outside Dundee, has set the standard for high-end, rural retreats. For two decades, the couple have offered guests exclusive escapes that beautifully combine luxury with a strong sense of place and provenance. Their dedication to quality and sustainability continues to inspire many other tourism and farming businesses across the country.
It was a joy to be part of this celebration, which brought together friends, colleagues and peers from across the tourism sector. We caught up with fellow ASSC members and shared stories with others involved in Scottish tourism – a true reflection of the strength and warmth of our community.
Guests enjoyed mouthwatering farm-reared beef burgers, expertly barbecued by Ross himself – a delicious reminder of the value of local food and the importance of championing Scottish produce.
Caroline’s leadership in the agritourism sector is widely recognised. Her passion and innovation have not only contributed to the success of Balkello Farm and The Hideaway Experience but have also shaped the national conversation around the future of farming and tourism in Scotland. As we look ahead to next summer’s Agritourism Conference – where our own Chief Executive, Fiona Campbell MBE, proudly serves as a Director of Scottish Agritourism – we are excited to continue working together to support and grow this vital part of our visitor economy.
Thank you, Caroline and Ross, for your generous hospitality, and congratulations once again on your impressive achievements. Here’s to the next chapter!
