Tourism Megatrends: What They Mean for Scotland’s Self-Catering Sector

The global travel industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. Tourism is moving away from a model driven primarily by price and transactions, towards one centred on experiences, personalisation and meaningful connection. From 2026, travellers are expected to prioritise trips that feel relevant, purposeful and enriching, while destinations are challenged to balance growth with sustainability and long-term resilience.

Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are central to this transformation. These tools enable smarter planning, predictive insights and more tailored visitor experiences, helping destinations and businesses deliver greater economic, social and cultural value. Recent analysis from Tourism Review highlights a series of tourism megatrends that illustrate how travel is evolving into something far more considered than simply moving from place to place.

These trends strongly support the role of self-catering as an ideal accommodation choice in Scotland. Flexible, place-based and locally connected, the sector is well positioned to respond to growing demand across wellness, events and experiences that foster a sense of belonging. To remain competitive, operators will need to deepen their understanding of AI and how it can benefit both businesses and visitors, strengthen links to local events, and collaborate more closely with destinations, communities and activity providers.

Key opportunities highlighted by the latest trends include:

  • Advanced personalisation– travellers increasingly seek stays aligned with specific goals, from reconnecting with loved ones and relaxing, to exploring new places or spending quality family time. AI-driven trip planning is accelerating demand for personalised recommendations before and during stays, with strong interest in sustainability, wellness and local culture.
  • The rise of wellness tourism– wellness is becoming a primary motivation for travel. Guests are choosing restorative breaks focused on nature, wellbeing and slower experiences, playing directly to Scotland’s strengths. Nature-based activities now account for 17.9% of all tourism activities in Europe.
  • Event-driven demand– festivals, sporting fixtures and cultural events are increasingly influencing booking decisions. This creates clear opportunities for self-catering businesses to develop themed offers and short-break stays linked to local and national events.
  • A growing sense of belonging through roots tourism– heritage and reconnection travel is expanding as visitors seek to rediscover identity, ancestry and personal history. This is not a niche market, but a structurally valuable segment, appealing particularly to couples and families seeking deeper emotional connections with place.
  • Smart and sustainable destinations powered by technology– travellers are using AI to plan more personalised trips, while destination managers use the same tools to predict demand, manage visitor flows and reduce environmental impact. Autonomous AI supports proactive strategies that improve sustainability and resilience in an increasingly complex tourism landscape.

Together, these megatrends point to a future where self-catering plays a central role in delivering high-value, experience-led tourism across Scotland.
