In a significant win for the short-term let sector, Perth and Kinross Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee has voted today (28th August 2024) against establishing Scotland’s third short-term let control area in Highland Perthshire and North Eastern Perthshire.
Councillors who opposed the proposal argued that creating a control area would not effectively address the issue of affordable housing in the region. Their decision to reject the recommendation to begin the formal statutory process is a testament to the influence of those who understand the economic and community value of short-term lets.
This outcome is a testament to the tireless lobbying efforts of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) and supporters of the short-term let sector. The ASSC has been a leading voice in defending the rights of self-catering owners and ensuring that regulations do not stifle tourism and local economies.
Fiona Campbell, CEO of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers, said:
“We are pleased that common sense has prevailed. The plans did not strike the appropriate regulatory balance and would have led to the closure of many small businesses – hitting the local economy in the process – without achieving the apparent policy objectives.
Short-term lets cannot continue to be used as a convenient scapegoat for much wider housing challenges. Closing down small businesses in Perth & Kinross would not lead to a glut of affordable homes as today’s vote recognised.
The ASSC wants to ensure a fair and proportionate approach for business, tourism and communities and we will work constructively with Perth & Kinross Council to achieve that end.”
Thanks to the relentless efforts of the ASSC and the many advocates who stood up for the sector, Highland Perthshire and North Eastern Perthshire will not be subject to restrictive control area regulations – helping to sustain the vibrancy and resilience of our local tourism communities.
