Self-Catering and Sustainability: Where to Begin

Self-catering businesses across Scotland are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Rising energy bills, increased guest expectations and evolving regulations are becoming part of everyday operations. The question is no longer if we need to adapt, it’s how.

A recent article by Bob Garner, founder of EnviroRental, published on PhocusWire, offers timely reflections for our sector. Drawing on conversations with property managers and operators, he highlights something many of us will recognise. While there’s wide agreement on the importance of sustainability, it’s not always clear where to start or what’s possible within the realities of running a small accommodation business.

The good news? There are simple, cost-effective steps self-caterers can take right now. From installing smart thermostats to reducing water flow or setting aside a small budget each year for green improvements, these actions can lead to lower running costs, better guest reviews and improved team engagement.

The same themes are explored in a recent episode of the Host Planet Podcast, where Bob speaks openly about the challenges of getting started, and the difference even small changes can make.
