ASSC Hosts Biggest-Ever Self-Catering Conference

Scotland’s leading authority on short-term rentals has held a record-breaking conference in Glasgow.

This year’s Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) conference attracted nearly 300 attendees, an all-time high for the Scottish sector, as well as dozens of exhibiters to Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel for a full day of events.

ASSC Conference 2019 was focused on the theme of “A Bright Global Future”, which drew much of the discussion towards how the sector can continue to provide a tourism offering that is world-leading and that caters for visitors from both home and abroad.

Held at a pivotal time for Scotland’s £723million traditional self-catering sector, the conference provided an opportunity to discuss regulations, technology, tax, and the social impact of the self-catering industry with leaders from industry, the public sector, and other stakeholders.

The conference included a video message from Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism, and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, who praised the hard work and dedication of Scotland’s short-term rental industry as well as highlighting the contribution the sector makes to the Scottish tourism economy.

An informative panel discussion was also held featuring City of Edinburgh Council leader, Councillor Adam McVey, Rachel Hamilton MSP, Marc Crothall from the Scottish Tourism Alliance, Scottish Government representative Gery McLaughlin, Cobbs Group Business Development Manager, Willie Cameron, and ASSC Chief Executive, Fiona Campbell, speaking.

Founded in 1978, the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) is the leading source of knowledge on short-term letting and holiday homes in Scotland. The ASSC is the only trade body representing the interests of the traditional self-catering sector. It has more than 650 Members, operating in excess of 7,000 self-catering properties throughout Scotland, from city centre apartments, to rural cottages, to lodges and chalets, to castles.

The ASSC commits its members to maintaining the principles of “quality, integrity, cleanliness, comfort, courtesy and efficiency” and to offering visitors to Scotland consistently high standards within their self-catering properties.

ASSC Chief Executive, Fiona Campbell, said:

“The ASSC works tirelessly to make sure our members’ voices are heard and our annual conference, which continues to break records in our sector, is one of the most hotly anticipated events of our year.

“With short-term letting being more topical than ever, it is absolutely vital that Scotland’s industry’s voice be heard and considered as part of the on-going conversation.

“I was delighted by the turnout and emboldened by the passion, energy, and optimism that I saw and felt; I think it’s safe to say that, with the right people behind it, our sector does indeed have ‘A Bright Global Future’”.
